Putting QI into Action: Continuous Quality Improvement Program Targets NC Division of Public Health Leaders

The Center for Public Health Quality, in partnership with the National Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Workforce Development Center and the NC State University Industrial Extension Service (IES), hosted a face-to-face workshop for 25 NC Division of Public Health (DPH) leaders on April 30th in Raleigh, NC.  The CQI for Leaders Program is an interactive program designed for NC DPH senior leaders who want to learn more about CQI and Lean methods in order to support staff and effect positive organizational change.  The program consists of an introductory webinar, a face-to-face workshop and a wrap-up webinar.  The workshop focused on the following key objectives:

  • Learn the CQI mindset, concepts, language and tools
  • Leverage the QI training staff have received
  • Sustain QI to drive change in organizations

Participants consisted of senior leaders from various DPH branches and sections: Children and Youth Branch, Contracts Office, Early Intervention Branch, Women’s Health Branch, State Laboratory of Public Health and the Oral Health Section.

“I think the most valuable aspect of the workshop was the ability to work with different people who had different ideas,” said a participant.

During the workshop, participants continued to learn more in-depth QI methods and tools, as well as develop action learning plans for self-improvement.  They were placed in action learning teams focused on discussing QI topics such as elements of a quality-minded organization, culture’s role in change and leading change.

“It’s exciting to see so many leaders from across the NC Division of Public Health investing their time and energy in continuous quality improvement – it will pay off huge dividends for DPH staff and the millions of North Carolinians they serve,” according to Dr. Greg Randolph.   Randolph served as one of the program faculty along with Dr. Steve Orton from the National MCH Workforce Development Center and Lou Anne Crawley-Stout from CPHQ and NCSU IES.

The next phase of the CQI for Leaders Program will consist of a wrap-up webinar in which participants will continue shared learning discussions around building a continuous improvement infrastructure.  Participants will also receive continued technical assistance from program faculty.
